The product

Hermes is a complete email solution based on Linux and Postfix, designed to cover the full spectrum of needs — from SME to ISP — in both intranet and internet environments. The stack is entirely Open Source: Linux, Postfix, OpenLDAP, OpenSSL, Zope.

Features

Hermes integrates a complete set of email services:

  • Protocols: POP3, IMAP4, SMTP
  • Webmail: access via HTTP/HTTPS with customisable graphics for each domain
  • Encryption: SSL on all protocols
  • User management: centralised directory on OpenLDAP
  • Antispam: heuristic filters, blacklists and customisable rules
  • Antivirus: Amavis engine with McAfee and F-prot engines
  • Backup: replication on twin-server for disaster recovery
  • Import/Export: migration of users and mailboxes between systems
  • Web administration: complete management interface
  • Vacation and Redirect: automatic replies and forwarding

Hermes integrates with InFlow CMS via Mailman for mailing list management.

References

The system is in production at several clients: all noze hosting clients (approximately 3,000 mailboxes), Radio 105 (500 mailboxes), the Faculty of Sciences at the University of Pisa (50 mailboxes).

Hermes demonstrates that an entirely Open Source stack can manage email infrastructure at significant scale with reliability and features comparable to proprietary solutions.
