On 28 May the fifth meeting of the seminar cycle organised by T-OSSLab takes place, in collaboration with the University of Pisa, the Polo Tecnologico di Navacchio, the Province of Pisa and Regione Toscana.

The aim of the initiative is to promote the spread and use of open source tools in the Public Administration through talks by lecturers and experts who explore their technical, management and strategic aspects. The seminars are also aimed at companies in the sector as an opportunity for discussion, exchange and enrichment.

The seminar takes place on 28 May 2009 at the Department of Computer Science, Largo B. Pontecorvo 3, Building C, G.B. Gerace lecture hall, Pisa, from 9:00 am to 5:30 pm.

The topic of the next seminar is Open Source in Schools.

Knowing how to use a computer is a basic skill that schools must provide. In organising themselves to fulfil this task, several solutions are possible. Among these, proposing only proprietary applications, often from a single vendor, is perhaps not the best choice.

Free software — and as such independent — is a widely viable path, both for quality and product availability. However, habits, inertia and the usual transition costs are still obstacles.

The seminar discusses the issue and presents some of the solutions adopted, both in local projects and in projects of national relevance. As a good practice of participation, dialogue among all attendees will be encouraged.
